Ludgvan School & The Local Community

Ludgvan School has a strong connection within the local community of Ludgvan, Penzance and the Penwith area.  Within our parental community we encourage families to be part of our whole school events where possible. Such as our parent and carer workshare open classrooms, where parents and carers are invited in to view their children’s excellent work and have a cup of tea and an edible treat whilst doing so. We also have close links with our local church, Ludgvan.

We work closely with Cannon Nigel and his wife, Penny to ensure the children know the history of the church, as well as visiting for special services, such as harvest, Remembrance Day, Christmas Christingles and Easter celebrations.  We also welcome Cannon Nigel into our assemblies each month where he supports us in our school value of Equity.

Within our school value of Excellence, for the past 4 years the children have produced an amazing school show and tickets have been sold to the wider community and have been sold out every time!  Our school sports day takes place on the community field and has a great reputation as ‘one of the best’ in the local area. We work closely with our trust secondary school to make this day a huge success and we are supported well by our PTA, the FLS.

Sports is a passion within our school and within our trust.  We believe that all children should take part in sporting activities to ensure they develop life long healthy living styles and we know this supports the children’s mental health and well being.  Within the trust community we have access to may local sports clubs, such as gymnastics, tennis and rugby and we work collaboratively with these clubs to ensure our children have access to these sports that they may not have otherwise had access to.

Through our trust schools we have developed the Leading Edge cup football league that engages and enables our most able footballers to compete each year for this prestigeous cup.

Within our school we are proud to be Cornish and like to celebrate local events, such as St Piran’s Day (The patron saint of Cornwall) and Golowan (Mazey Day).  During these days are children dance through the main street of Penzance, sing traditional Cornish songs and carry large pieces of 3D artwork they have made with local artists.  This year we will be taking part in the lantern parade at Twengwainton Gardens, as long side many other local schools.

Through our outdoor learning curriculum we have developed strong links with farmers in our local community. With these links we have been able to get the children out on to chicken and dairy farms so that they can understand the work that in taking place in the fields around them.  We have also developed our excellent orienteering program in which we are able to host orienteering events for other schools, as well sending our children out into our local area on some lengthy navigational walks.  These events form excellent life lessons for our children and are right on their doorstep.

For the past few years, our children have been lucky enough to perform in the world famous Minack Theatre.  An amazing cliff top theatre.  The children have worked with some fantastic local and national musicians, authors and choreographers, providing the children with a super opportunity not to be missed.
